The catch: the sale only became public on June 1, when Strategy filed a Form 8-K with the SEC. By that point, the Polymarket question - "Will MicroStrategy sell any Bitcoin by May 31, 2026?" - had already received a preliminary "No" resolution. After an initial round of disputes, it resolved to "No" again.

Polymarket added an official note to the market: "No information from MSTR, on-chain data, or consensus of credible reporting confirmed that MicroStrategy sold Bitcoin within the market's timeframe. Confirmation achieved outside of the market's time frame does not qualify."

The market had accumulated $85 million in total volume, with roughly $53 million in open positions on the May 31 slice. At least one trader publicly claimed losses of $500,000. Accusations spread across social media that Polymarket had retroactively changed the rules to avoid paying out Yes holders.

The sale itself - 32 BTC - amounts to 0.0038% of Strategy's 843,706-coin bitcoin treasury. Analysts have pointed to genuine capital pressure building at the company: roughly $15 billion in preferred stock obligations and a recent convertible debt buyback have visibly thinned the cash buffer.

Technically, Polymarket markets resolve through the UMA oracle infrastructure. When a resolution is disputed, any participant can post a bond to trigger a debate period, after which UMA token holders vote on the correct outcome. That process takes 48 to 96 hours and is currently underway for this market.

The central question dividing the community is whether what matters is when the event occurred or when it was publicly confirmed. The market rules required "confirmation" of a sale before the deadline - not the sale itself. Some traders argue this was an implicit condition that was never written clearly enough; others maintain that prediction markets operate on publicly verifiable information by design, not on events that happen behind closed doors.

How UMA token holders vote will determine not only who gets paid, but set a precedent for every future corporate market on the platform.
